ASUS GTX680 DirectCU II TOP Edition
The DirectCU II TOP is a beefy version of the GTX 680, intended for overclockers looking for added cooling and features. In the center of it all is the Asus DirectCU II cooler, which is equipped with dual fans and heat pipes that should enable significantly higher clock speeds compared to cards based on the reference model such as the EVGA 680.
Asus’ DCII series almost always divert from the specifications. Here, the reference PCB has even been replaced with a custom variant to make room for the added cooling capabilities. Naturally, the clock frequencies have also been dialed up right out of the box – in this case to 1201 MHz (boost mode), 142 MHz above standard specs. It transfers the heat out of the contraption by way of dual 100 mm fans.
The graphics card is also bigger than average and requires ample room in your PC case. It occupies three slots instead of the usual two, so keep this in mind if you are building a PC with a mini-ATX case or if you are planning for an SLI setup. This card is not suitable in such circumstances.
Asus has improved the power supply options to the DirectCU II by using 6 + 8 pin PCI connectors as opposed to 6 + 6- pin on the reference model. There are plenty of other options for enthusiasts as well. Asus has left a door open for voltage modifications and other customizations, particularly if also combined with an Asus motherboard.
Reviews
When seeing this card for the first time, it can seem over the top and somewhat ridiculous but in the past, it’s been nearly impossible to criticize ASUS’ design fundamentals due to the DirectCU’s ability to drastically reduce core temperatures.
ASUS has been one of Nvidia’s premier partners for a while, and for good reason. ASUS always has a special way of supercharging its GPU offerings …
